When her trousers were confiscated on set one morning, she chose to walk back to the studio lot wearing nothing but her underwear.

This legendary 1930s anecdote perfectly captures the uncompromising attitude of Katharine Hepburn—one of Hollywood's greatest icons and recipient of an unmatched record four Academy Awards for Best Actress—towards trousers.

Studio executives had hidden her trousers after finding no other way to compel Katharine to wear the elegant dresses and skirts they deemed fitting for a star.

Further incidents followed. Defying opposition from studio heads and producers, Hepburn wore trousers throughout much of the 1940 classic romantic comedy The Philadelphia Story.

Over the decades, societal attitudes toward women wearing trousers shifted slowly. When Claridge's Hotel in London informed Hepburn in 1951 that women were barred from wearing trousers in the main lobby, she simply began entering through the staff entrance.

Neither executive pressure nor societal norms succeeded in bending her standards—Hepburn maintained her fight for a woman's right to wear trousers across her distinguished, nearly six-decade career.

Hepburn's devotion to trousers was deeply authentic.

Unlike many of her early 20th-century peers, such as Marlene Dietrich, the spirited Hepburn explained her choice not as a political statement or deliberate provocation of social norms, but simply as the most pragmatic garment for her active lifestyle.

Hepburn's mother, descending from the industrial dynasty that established the glassworks producing today's iPhone screens, was a prominent suffragette and feminist of her era. She cultivated independence, broad perspectives, and higher education for young women at home.

Raised in this progressive household, Hepburn adopted trousers for their functional ease during early childhood.

Athletic and passionate about swimming, cycling, and golf, Hepburn valued trousers above all for their utility, though she remained equally perceptive of their aesthetic merit:

"I like to move fast, and wearing high heels was tough, and low heels with a skirt is unattractive. So pants took over."

Hepburn is most famous for her high-waisted trouser silhouettes, though this was less a fleeting fashion choice than a reflection of the textile engineering of the era.

Before the mid-20th-century introduction of synthetic stretch fibers, virtually all tailored trousers were cut high on the waist. Working with rigid, non-stretch woven wools, the most ergonomic and flattering design was a high-rise waist sitting at the narrowest point, paired with front pleats to allow room for natural movement.

Across Hepburn's extensive photographic archives, trousers integrate seamlessly into her everyday aesthetic. Captured in dynamic poses, she clearly revels in the ease and autonomy her wardrobe granted.

The merits of wide-leg, high-waisted trousers remain every bit as relevant today as in Hepburn's era. In this edition, we have curated three distinct high-waisted trouser styles.

    THREE IDEAS: Autumn Palette Highlights

    Four seasons are hardly enough.

In Japan, for instance, the year is traditionally divided into 72 micro-seasons, 24 sub-seasons, and 4 major seasons.

According to the traditional Japanese calendar, the period from August 18 to 22 marks the micro-season known as Deep Fog Descends (Fukaki kiri matō). Days remain warm, yet cool nights gift fog-draped mornings.

Isn't it wonderful to divide the year into smaller, more present timeframes?

As the seasons shift, it is equally rewarding to consider palette choices tailored for autumn.

    1. Rich burgundy silk and wool scarf
    2. Deep navy mohair and silk knit sweater
    3. Tailored camel blazer

    Melange Texture

These wide-leg trousers present a harmonious synthesis of subtle tailoring details.

The melange weave appears dark grey from a distance, yet reveals a intricate texture upon closer inspection. A 6 cm turn-up hem anchors the wide-leg silhouette with structured poise.

    Flexible Comfort

Crafted from 100% pure wool, these tailored trousers conceal a discreet functional detail—an elasticated back waistband for exceptional ease of wear.

Featuring a graceful drape and relaxed cut, they offer refined elegance across both professional and off-duty settings.
