Scandinavian sailors were among the first to systematically search for methods to render cotton water-resistant. They soaked cotton sails and garments in various oils, having noticed that cotton treated this way became significantly more resistant to water.
These early 15th-century experiments initiated a centuries-long sequence of textile innovations, in which England eventually assumed the leading position. The developmental history of weatherproof cotton encompasses the origins of Burberry and other celebrated heritage labels.
By the mid-twentieth century, technical advances in textiles created the ideal conditions for England to become the cradle of global fashion trends as well.
A prime example is the innovative Ventile fabric developed in the 1940s, which boasted remarkable water repellency without requiring any chemical proofing or coating. This was achieved using exceptionally long-staple cotton yarns spun into an extremely dense weave. Owing to these properties, Ventile became the standard specification for Royal Air Force flight jackets.
These weatherproof cropped jackets became an iconic staple of the women within the Mod movement, known as „Modettes“.
In the 1950s, young women in Britain began seeking more contemporary modes of self-expression rather than passively inheriting established fashion conventions. The Mod movement emerged as one of the defining cultural shifts embodying this era.
Originating around the mid-1940s, the Mod movement derived its name from the term modernist, initially used to describe enthusiasts of modern jazz. Standing in deliberate opposition to traditional British social norms, Mod evolved into one of the most vibrant subcultures of the 1960s, articulated primarily through music and sartorial style.
The Mod movement united prominent fashion models of the era like Twiggy, television personalities, musicians, and cultural icons, leaving a profound mark on fashion history in a brief period. This transformative era birthed style innovations such as the miniskirt (a subject for future newsletters) and numerous other sartorial classics.
Practical, matte-textured, and muted in tone (described by Mods themselves as „decayed colors“), these short jackets complemented the rebellious yet refined aesthetic of the Mod philosophy.
Another functional advantage lay in their proportions—a cropped silhouette allowing unhindered movement paired with a high protective collar made them ideal for riding the newly popularized motor scooters favored by Modettes.
