„A voice like silver bells and a purity of execution that belongs to another world.“
    – Niccolò Paganini

„We have heard louder voices, but never one that touches the heart so soothingly – nor one that imparts such profound fulfillment.“
    – Théophile Gautier

These are merely a few tributes dedicated to the celebrated opera soprano Henriette Sontag.

An even higher distinction was bestowed upon her by Ludwig van Beethoven himself, who personally invited her to star as the lead soprano for the historic premiere of his Ninth Symphony.

Beethoven was notoriously demanding of vocalists, and the vocal passages of his Ninth Symphony, including the „Ode to Joy,“ are regarded by musicologists as some of the most formidable challenges in the operatic repertoire.

Expectations for Beethoven's 1824 Vienna premiere—his first major orchestral unveiling in twelve years—were immense, and Sontag delivered brilliantly.

This triumph elevated the 18-year-old Sontag to operatic acclaim; by twenty, she was established as one of Europe's premier prima donnas.

Her subsequent decision astonished her international public: at twenty-two, she secretly married Count Carlo Rossi, a Sardinian diplomat, and abruptly retired from the stage.

She embraced domestic life, raised seven children, and devoted herself entirely to aristocratic and diplomatic society.

Her eventual return to the stage two decades later proved perhaps even more surprising than her sudden departure.

Even more remarkable was that, defying skeptical expectations, Sontag's matured vocal timbre possessed even greater depth and technical brilliance.

It remains historically uncertain precisely when the diva's name became attached to triangular crossed shawls, but by 1843, victorian knitting manuals routinely referred to these crossover kerchiefs as „Sontags.“

While it is plausible that Sontag wore protective neckwear to safeguard her vocal cords, no direct archival evidence exists to confirm this, nor any record of her endorsing the style.

It appears these kerchiefs acquired the Sontag moniker alongside a wave of consumer goods named in homage to her international celebrity—contemporaneous fashion periodicals advertised Sontag cloaks, Sontag bonnets, and even Austrian Sontag pastries.

Triangular crossed wool kerchiefs existed across European folk traditions—from the Swedish hjärtvärmare (literally "heart-warmer") to Czech vlňáček. However, the eponym „Sontag“ became popularized almost exclusively in English-speaking countries.

Today, compact wool kerchiefs remain an undeservedly overlooked accessory. They represent a versatile sartorial layer capable of offering both functional warmth and refined accenting.

In this edition, we have curated two compact triangular kerchiefs honoring the Sontag tradition alongside a hand-knitted beret inspired by the broad namesake spirit of her legacy.

    THREE IDEAS: Popular Fine Jewelry

„Rings and other jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts. The only gift is a portion of thyself,“ wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson in his 1844 essay.

On this occasion, we respectfully offer a nuance to Emerson's sentiment. While a portion of oneself is unquestionably the ultimate gesture, fine jewelry serves as a timeless physical symbol of that devotion.

    The Science of Brushed Wool

Let us briefly examine textile thermal physics.

Garment thermal insulation is quantified in Clo units. 1 Clo corresponds to the insulation required to maintain a resting human in thermal comfort at 21 °C.

Compared to standard flat knits, mechanical teaseling (brushing) can elevate a wool textile's Clo coefficient by up to 30% by trapping microscopic insulating air pockets.

Historically, even prior to laboratory testing, wearers of wool accessories—especially close-fitting neckwear—recognized the pragmatic value of brushed fibers, making teaseling a hallmark of traditional Sontags.

An added benefit of brushed finishing is the significant reduction of tactile coarseness against sensitive skin.

    Brushed Tactility

Crafted from 100% pure cashmere, this triangular kerchief elevates cashmere's natural tactility through mechanical brushing.

Its brushed nap invites direct wear against the neck, delivering exceptional softness alongside thermal efficiency.

Refined finishing details, such as delicate overcast borders and elongated proportions, offer versatile styling options.

Note from the Fox: The tactile softness of this brushed finish is gentle enough for even the most delicate skin.

    Stylistic Accent

Our final selection, inspired by the eclectic namesake tradition surrounding Sontag, is a hand-knitted beret rather than a kerchief.

This classic beret is hand-crafted from a soft blend of 15% cashmere and 85% fine merino wool.

Structured yet comfortable, it provides gentle warmth alongside an expressive architectural silhouette.
